The top design “Dandelion” was created for a stroller accessory company out of Washington. The bottom was a design “Sputnik” created for a Spoonflower contest that I just had to print and sew into pyjamas for my little girl.

The Project Selvage competition from Spoonflower and Michael Miller Fabrics offers the chance to become a licensed fabric designer. The project was to design a fabric for baby boys. 75 finalists to be announced on March 31st. www.projectselvage.com

On Sunday I popped in to see the throw pillow class in the SWFDS sewing lounge. I was also saying goodbye to my good friends who run Bling Squared.

The throw pillow class looked like it went well and students were happy with the final product.

I finally got the chance to do some shopping. That’s the nice thing about a craft fair that spreads over a couple of days. For me it means I get to return to buy the stuff I’ve had some time to think about.

My first purchase was a gorgeous screen t for my daughter, equipped with soother clip. It was from New K Industry. Unfortunately I can’t find a photo of the style I bought.

I wanted to buy (or at least taste) the amazing Coachhouse Shortbread that I had been hearing so much about but for the second time of the weekend, they were completely sold out.

And finally, I got to buy a top from Maryanne’s amazing line Osei-Duro I feel like I could wear it everyday… until forever! (shown below)

Next it was time to head over to see Sheila at the sewing lounge. Her first class was using some fabric that I had dyed and discharge printed to create some beautiful infinity scarves. Pictures of the process are shown below. I was really hoping to get some of the students to model their work but everyone seemed a bit camera shy.

The sewing lounge will continue to offer complimentary sewing classes during the One of a Kind Show. The classes teaching baby bibs and throw pillows will also be using my fabrics.

Today was a long, somewhat grueling but intensely inspiring day.

I started out by meeting my mentor for the first time at Mink Chocolates. My mentor, Lynn Williams of the Lifestyle Protector is a creative force with so much advice and enthusiasm to offer. I am grateful to have been hooked up with her.

I then spent four hours at BLIM – which has become my second home. Kaytee Kilgore is an amazing resource – she teaches at BLIM, including the discharge screen printing classes. Every time I’m in she has something new to teach me, so “Thank You Kaytee”!

Okay, on to the One of a Kind Show….
So much inspiring talent under one roof. My favourite of the day was Osei-Duro (image shown below). A local label designed by Maryanne Mathias and Molly Keogh. Here is an excellent post comparing Osei-Duro to Suno (one of my passions right now but out of New York and out of my price range). I can’t wait to buy some of their pieces. They produce all of their line in Ghana paying fair wages. You can read more about their production process here.

It’s craft season and I’ve been discovering lots of local artisans already taking advantage of digital textile printing. I first discovered Kukubee at the MakeIt Show in November. They’ve printed fabric with Spoonflower to make their “I love the 80s” tote bag (shown above). They also make the cutest little pouches – perfect for any girl to take to school. I really admire the illustration work by Brent. Don’t know where they will be showing up next but you can buy their stuff on Etsy.

I also discovered Cutesypoo toys while at MakeIt. I knew right away that Jocelan’s Gnomes (shown below), must be printed digitally. What a creative use of the technology! You can also buy all of her stuff on Etsy.

And last but not least, some gorgeous fabric from Dotty Logic. Jasonda is a graphic designer and illustrator living in Vancouver but originally from Texas. I’m really looking forward to seeing her stuff in person this weekend at Got Craft? She’s has a gorgeous line of textiles available for Christmas (shown below) that are also available on Etsy.

I had ordered swatches in the past but this was the first time I had placed a full order through Spoonflower. I was really impressed with their speed and their service. The only thing I would improve upon is their ability to do color matching. I’m used to setting my designs up for traditional printing. With their service, you upload an RGB image and then just keep your fingers crossed. I know they have plans in the works to improve on this.

So far, it’s a great way to test out my designs. All of these shown (except the Dandelion print in green) will be used in the SWFDS sewing lounge at the upcoming One of a Kind Show in Vancouver.
